The Aspen Art Museum is a non-collecting institution presenting the newest, most important evolutions in international contemporary art. The structure that housed the former Aspen Art Museum on North Mill Street was originally built in 1888 for the Hunter Creek Power Plant. Aspen was the 1st city west of the Mississippi to have streetlights powered by hydroelectric energy generated by the power plant although it was initially developed to service the mining operations in the city.
